The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), in partnership with the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), has officially announced the rollout of a new unified Taxpayer Identification system designed to cover all taxable persons across the country. The move is part of a broader effort to modernize Nigeria’s tax administration and improve compliance.

According to a public notice released on Monday, the initiative aligns with Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025. The law requires every taxable individual and business operating in Nigeria to obtain a Tax ID, which will now serve as a central identity for all tax-related activities.

The NRS explained that the new Tax ID will function as a single, unified identity for taxpayers, making it easier to interact with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels. The agency added that the system is designed to eliminate duplicate records, consolidate taxpayer data, and improve the efficiency of tax administration nationwide.

Beyond simplification, the agency highlighted that the system will strengthen transparency and accountability in tax collection. It is expected to reduce revenue leakages, improve record tracking, and streamline essential processes such as registration, filing, and payment of taxes across Nigeria’s tax ecosystem.

The NRS also confirmed that the new system will replace the existing Tax Identification Number (TIN) Validation API used by government agencies, banks, and other institutions. Organizations requiring integration have been directed to contact relevant departments under the JRB and NRS. The agency further noted that the NIN for individuals and CAC registration numbers for businesses may continue to function as Tax IDs under existing provisions, reinforcing continuity in the evolving tax framework.
