AKK Gas Pipeline Project Set to Revolutionize Nigeria’s Economy and Industrial Growth

Nigeria’s ambitious $2.8 billion Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project is being described as a game-changer that could reshape the country’s industrial and economic future. Energy expert and member of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Group of Experts on Gas, Mr. Olabode Sowunmi, says the project will “revolutionise Nigeria” once fully operational.

The 614-kilometre pipeline, designed to transport natural gas from the Niger Delta to northern Nigeria, is expected to significantly boost gas penetration, power generation, and industrial development. According to Sowunmi, the infrastructure will also support the creation of industrial clusters, generate employment opportunities, and improve living standards across the country.

First conceived in 2008 and formally approved in 2017, the project has experienced several delays due to financing and technical challenges, including the difficult River Niger crossing. Despite this, Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) confirmed in March 2026 that mainline welding has been completed, marking a major milestone toward first gas flow.

The pipeline is designed to deliver up to 2.2 billion cubic feet per day in its first phase and potentially scale to 3.5 billion cubic feet at full capacity. It is also expected to add about 3,600 megawatts to Nigeria’s electricity grid, reduce reliance on diesel generators, cut gas flaring, and revive industrial hubs in cities such as Abuja, Kaduna, and Kano.

Experts believe the AKK pipeline is central to Nigeria’s broader “Decade of Gas” agenda, which targets increased domestic gas utilization and industrial expansion. Sowunmi noted that infrastructure is the missing link in Nigeria’s gas development, stressing that projects like AKK could mirror past industrial booms triggered by gas pipeline connectivity in other parts of the country.
