The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have joined forces to strengthen the enforcement of compulsory Third-Party Motor Insurance across Nigeria. The collaboration was formalised with the inauguration of a Joint Committee at NAICOM’s headquarters in Abuja, marking a major milestone in the implementation of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025.

According to NAICOM, the newly inaugurated committee will drive the enforcement of valid motor insurance policies, eliminate fake insurance certificates, and improve compensation processes for road accident victims. The initiative underscores both agencies’ shared goal of enhancing road safety, boosting compliance, and ensuring prompt support for accident victims.

Speaking during the inauguration, the Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Olusegun Omosehin, praised the FRSC for its leadership and partnership. He explained that the collaboration would lead to the integration of insurance and vehicle registration databases, improved protection for motorists, and wider public education on insurance obligations. Omosehin added that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to reform key national sectors for inclusive development.

In his remarks, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, described the partnership as a model of inter-agency cooperation that will enhance the enforcement of compulsory motor insurance and promote the welfare of road users. He stressed that the FRSC is committed to leveraging technology, data sharing, and field operations to make insurance compliance seamless and sustainable.

The Joint Committee, co-chaired by senior officials from both NAICOM and FRSC, will focus on several key mandates, including reducing the number of uninsured vehicles, ensuring prompt compensation for accident victims, promoting microinsurance for commercial drivers and passengers, and enabling real-time insurance verification through digital integration. NAICOM will serve as the Committee’s Secretariat, coordinating joint field operations, public awareness campaigns, and ongoing policy evaluations to strengthen consumer confidence in Nigeria’s insurance sector.
