Nigeria’s power sector received a major boost as the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) announced the restoration of the 450-megawatt Alaoji Open Cycle Power Plant in Abia State, which had been out of operation since 2023 due to gas supply disputes and metering challenges.
The Managing Director and CEO of NDPHC, Engr. Jennifer Adighije, disclosed the development during a meeting with Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, where she briefed him on the successful efforts to bring the facility back online after months of rehabilitation and negotiations.
According to her, the shutdown was triggered by unresolved discrepancies between metering and trading points, which led gas supplier TotalEnergies to suspend supply, while accumulated debts further worsened the situation. She added that upon assuming office in 2024, restoring the plant became a top priority for the company.
Adighije confirmed that all critical repairs on the gas infrastructure had been completed and outstanding obligations settled, leading to the resumption of gas supply. She noted that three generating units—GT1, GT22, and GT23—are now operational and capable of dispatching about 375 megawatts to the national grid, strengthening electricity availability.
Governor Alex Otti welcomed the development, describing it as a significant milestone for Abia State’s industrial and economic growth. He also revealed plans to potentially expand the plant’s capacity up to 800 megawatts and beyond, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to improving electricity supply through partnerships, renewable energy projects, and a structured state power market.
