In a bid to foster a more robust entrepreneurial ecosystem, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has announced a partnership with key players in Nigeria’s tech sector to establish the National Council for Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship, also known as the Start-up Council. The initiative, which is part of the Nigeria Startup Act (NSA), aims to empower and support the country’s start-up ecosystem. A consultative forum to nominate council members is scheduled for April 28, 2025.

Hadiza Umar, NITDA’s Director of Corporate Communications, highlighted that the upcoming forum would play a crucial role in strengthening stakeholder engagement within the dynamic start-up community. She emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting an innovation-friendly environment where start-ups can thrive as central drivers of economic growth. This development comes as part of a broader push to engage all relevant stakeholders in shaping policies that benefit the tech and start-up sectors.

The Start-up Council will serve as the apex advisory body for Nigeria’s growing start-up ecosystem, ensuring that voices from all corners of the tech industry are heard. Umar called on start-ups, innovation organizations, angel investors, venture capitalists, and other key stakeholders to actively participate in the forum and contribute to the nomination and voting process. The goal is to create a comprehensive platform for collaboration and sustainable growth within Nigeria’s digital economy.

The Nigeria Startup Act, signed into law in 2022, has been a catalyst for the country’s startup growth, offering incentives such as seed funding and easier business registration processes. NITDA is encouraging stakeholders to engage with the agency via email or its website for more information and to get involved in shaping the future of Nigeria’s digital innovation landscape.
