The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has marked a major milestone with the export of 12 cargoes of refined petroleum products, totaling 456,000 tonnes, to countries including Ghana, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, and Tanzania. This move represents the refinery’s first major outbound shipments since reaching its full production capacity of 650,000 barrels per day in February, signaling Nigeria’s growing influence in regional energy markets.
Sold on a free-on-board (FOB) basis to international traders, these exports reflect the refinery’s ambitions beyond Nigeria’s borders. In a briefing to journalists, the company highlighted that the achievement not only meets domestic fuel demands but also positions Dangote Refinery as a key supplier across the continent. “This accomplishment underscores our ability to supply high-quality fuel efficiently,” the company said.
The timing of the exports is significant, arriving amid global energy market disruptions that have left several African nations seeking alternatives to Gulf-based fuel supplies. Dangote has positioned its Euro 5-standard gasoline and diesel as a solution to long-standing issues with lower-quality imports, emphasizing both the quality and reliability of locally refined products for the region.
Beyond fuel standards, proximity is a competitive advantage. By delivering directly to neighbouring markets, Dangote reduces logistics costs and supply chain delays that have historically inflated fuel prices. This strategic approach helps ease cost pressures while strengthening trade relationships between Nigeria and key African economies.
Looking ahead, the refinery has expressed plans to expand its supply network across West, East, and Central Africa. By doing so, Dangote aims to play an increasingly pivotal role in continental energy security, providing consistent, high-quality fuel while supporting regional economic integration.
