Chad’s government has unveiled plans to offer free water and electricity to households until the end of the year. Under the initiative, households will enjoy a monthly consumption allowance of up to 15 cubic meters of water and 300 kWh of electricity, with the government covering the costs. Additionally, the government will clear outstanding water and electricity bills for residents with arrears. In a bid to alleviate transport expenses, the government has also reduced transport taxes, which had increased due to rising fuel prices last month. The policy, sanctioned by Chad’s junta leader and interim President Mahamat Déby, aims to assist households facing economic challenges. However, some Chadians view the move as a strategic maneuver by Déby ahead of the upcoming presidential elections scheduled between May and June. Despite mixed reactions, with concerns raised over ongoing power outages in parts of the capital, N’Djamena, many Chadians welcome the measure as a much-needed relief amid the prevailing cost-of-living crisis. The initiative reflects the government’s efforts to address pressing economic issues and alleviate financial burdens on households across the country.
