Nigerian Customs Aims to Simplify Trade with Single Clearance Document
Nigerian Customs is working towards a system that uses a single document for cargo clearance, according to Comptroller General Adewale Adeniyi. This initiative aims to streamline the process and reduce barriers to trade.
Adeniyi explained that currently, the clearance process involves multiple documents from various agencies. The new system would combine the requirements of all stakeholders, including the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), into one document.
This approach is expected to benefit both customs operations and trade in general. It aligns with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) goal for nations to achieve a Port Community System (PCS) by 2025. Nigeria’s Customs Integrated Information System (NICIS) is a step towards this goal, and the single document system would be a further integration.
By simplifying the clearance process, Nigerian Customs hopes to boost trade efficiency and contribute to the nation’s development.
