The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has launched the pilot phase of its new healthcare support programme, known as the PenCare initiative, aimed at improving the welfare of retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). The programme is designed to ease the financial pressure of medical expenses for elderly pensioners.

Under the pilot phase, PenCom is targeting at least 30,000 retirees across Nigeria who meet specific eligibility requirements. The initiative is strictly on a first-come, first-served basis, highlighting the urgency for qualified pensioners to enrol early before slots are filled.

According to the commission, retirees who are at least 60 years old and receive a monthly pension not exceeding ₦70,000 from a Pension Fund Administrator (PFA) are eligible to participate in the programme. Registration has already commenced through QR codes provided in newspapers and on PFA websites.

PenCom explained that PenCare is a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative focused on preserving the dignity and well-being of retirees. The scheme aims to reduce the burden of out-of-pocket medical expenses, which often weigh heavily on low-income pensioners.

The commission encouraged eligible retirees to take advantage of the opportunity, noting that access to quality healthcare remains a key priority in improving retirement living standards under the CPS framework.
