AI to Boost Farm Yields and Reduce Losses in Nigeria – Experts Highlight Potential of Multimodal Technology
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to significantly transform Nigeria’s agricultural sector by increasing crop yields and minimizing losses, according to Chioma Okoro, Chief Operating Officer of Wootlab Innovations. Speaking during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Okoro emphasized that AI—particularly multimodal AI that integrates various data sources—can support farmers in making smarter, real-time decisions on key farming activities such as planting, fertilizing, and harvesting.
Okoro explained that these AI systems help eliminate guesswork by analyzing real-time data, providing valuable insights for farmers to optimize their operations. Tools such as soil yield maps and performance analytics can monitor crop performance, improve land use, and ultimately boost productivity. Though AI in agriculture is still developing in Nigeria, she noted that the technology is already reshaping how farmers interact with the land and respond to environmental challenges.
In addition to improving yields, AI can also enhance transparency and fairness in agriculture. Okoro pointed out that in developed nations, digital farming tools have spurred innovation, creating more efficient and data-driven agricultural systems. In Nigeria, she believes similar adoption can create a more equitable and modern agricultural ecosystem.
AI also has strong potential in forecasting weather patterns and detecting early signs of crop stress from factors like pests, droughts, or inadequate water supply. These predictive capabilities allow farmers to take preventative action before problems escalate, helping to avoid significant crop losses and ensuring better planning throughout the growing season.
Further backing the role of AI in agriculture, Abel Aboh, a Data and AI expert, had previously called for Nigeria to embrace AI as a strategic solution for food security. He emphasized the need for government investment in AI technologies and the importance of building a skilled workforce to support implementation. As AI continues to evolve, both experts believe it holds transformative potential for Nigeria’s future, particularly in achieving sustainable food sufficiency through smart agriculture.
