Workers at Canadian National Railway (CNR) will return to work on Friday after the Canadian government intervened to end an unprecedented rail stoppage.

The Teamsters union confirmed the resumption, while the work stoppage at Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) continues pending a ruling from the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB).

The stoppage, which began after more than 9,000 unionized workers were locked out, prompted concerns of significant economic damage.

The Canadian government has requested a back-to-work order and proposed binding arbitration to resolve the dispute.
