Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, expressed strong discontent with Nigeria’s current electricity generation capacity of 5,000 megawatts, calling it “shameful” for a nation with over 200 million people.

During a meeting with the Civil-Military Committee on Energy Security, Adelabu criticized past leadership for failing to adequately address the power sector’s challenges over the past 60 years, citing outdated transformers and inadequate infrastructure.

Adelabu emphasized that the current administration under President Bola Tinubu is committed to overhauling the power sector.

He outlined the government’s goal of eradicating energy poverty and improving electricity access across the country.

The minister also highlighted efforts to protect critical power infrastructure from vandalism, which he described as a significant issue hampering the sector’s progress.

The minister reaffirmed that revitalizing the power sector is a top priority for the government and is expected to positively impact other sectors as well.
