Telcos Invest in Network Upgrades Amid Tariff Hikes to Satisfy Nigerian Customers

Telecom operators in Nigeria are embarking on major network infrastructure upgrades to address growing frustrations among customers due to poor connectivity. Sources reveal that companies such as Glo, Airtel, and MTN are investing millions of dollars in new equipment, some of which has already arrived in the country. These upgrades are expected to improve service quality in certain areas, though nationwide improvements will take time. The investments aim to resolve the ongoing issues related to declining network quality that have left millions of customers dissatisfied.

The network overhaul follows the recent approval by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for a 50% increase in telecom tariffs, which includes calls, data, and SMS charges. This tariff hike has been a long-awaited move by telecom operators, who have been pushing for price adjustments due to economic conditions and rising operational costs. The increase in prices is expected to allow telecom companies to make necessary investments in upgrading their network infrastructure.

The tariff hike has led to a significant surge in data costs, with the average price of 1GB of data increasing by over 100%. The price now stands at N587.5, up from N287.5. While the NCC argues that the adjustment is necessary to bridge the gap between operational costs and tariffs, customers are already feeling the financial strain, with some voicing frustration over the cost and quality of service. Freelance writer Percy Ani shared his dissatisfaction, stating that he is paying significantly more for data while experiencing poor internet connectivity.

Despite the challenges, telecom companies are optimistic that the ongoing investments will eventually enhance network quality, customer service, and coverage across Nigeria. However, customers remain skeptical, as the relief from improved service may take time to materialize.
