Nigeria is making a strong push to transition towards Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a transportation fuel. The government aims to significantly reduce reliance on imported petrol and leverage the country’s abundant gas reserves.
New regulations will require all new gas stations to include dispensing points for CNG. Existing stakeholders, including truck and fleet operators, are also being pressured to convert their vehicles to use CNG due to the high cost of diesel.
Officials are promoting CNG as a cheaper, cleaner, and more sustainable alternative fuel. A nationwide program to convert mass transit buses to CNG is already underway. The government hopes to convert one million diesel and petrol vehicles in total, potentially saving billions of dollars annually on fuel imports.
