Muslims across Nigeria are observing Ramadan fasting amidst a backdrop of heatwaves, high living costs, and power shortages. Despite these obstacles, Muslims adhere to fasting from dawn to sunset throughout Ramadan, abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and other indulgences, as mandated by Islam’s five pillars.
In states like Kano, Adamawa, Borno, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where Muslims engage in strenuous labor, individuals have adapted various strategies to cope with the challenges posed by the hot weather, rising living expenses, and electricity blackouts. Labourers and bricklayers at construction sites in Kano, for instance, have adjusted their working hours to accommodate the intense heat while fasting.
The observance of Ramadan fosters a sense of discipline, spirituality, and solidarity among Muslims, despite the difficulties they face. As they fulfill their religious obligations, many individuals rely on faith, resilience, and community support to navigate the rigors of fasting amidst challenging conditions. Ramadan serves as a time for reflection, prayer, and charitable acts, reinforcing the values of compassion, empathy, and self-discipline within the Muslim community.
