Nigerian Presidential Election Tribunal to Rule on Tinubu’s Victory

Nigeria’s presidential election tribunal is set to announce its decision on Wednesday regarding Bola Tinubu’s continued presidency, which was challenged by two opponents following the disputed February election.

Previous Nigerian presidential elections have faced various legal challenges, but none have managed to overturn the results. The general expectation among political analysts is that the tribunal will affirm Tinubu’s victory.

Atiku Abubakar from the People’s Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Labour Party filed a joint petition seeking to invalidate the election results. They cited irregularities and accused the electoral body of violating the law by not using electronic machines for uploading polling station results, among other allegations.

The presidential election tribunal, situated in the capital city of Abuja, holds the authority to annul an election and call for a fresh one, among other potential remedies. If the tribunal upholds Tinubu’s victory, Atiku and Obi can still make a final appeal to Nigeria’s Supreme Court, the nation’s highest judicial body. This appeal must be concluded within 60 days from the date of the tribunal’s judgment.
