Workers of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) staged a protest at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, demanding the payment of seven months’ salaries and resolution of other pending issues.

The staff expressed frustration over the unpaid emoluments, considering the rising living costs and economic challenges.

NUPRC CEO, Gbenga Komolafe, responded to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) protest letter, addressing issues of pension remittance, work environment, working tools, medicals, and outstanding payments.

Despite the explanations, the protesters blocked the entrance of the commission, leading to suspicions of premeditated action beyond staff welfare concerns.

The commission’s management faced harassment and pressure from dissatisfied stakeholders due to its efforts to sanitize the oil and gas industry.

Opinion

The protest by NUPRC workers highlights the severity of their financial struggles amidst an already challenging economic climate. It also sheds light on the complex issues faced by the commission and the delicate balance between meeting staff demands and maintaining financial stability in the current economic landscape.
