Nigerian Electricity Consumers to Receive Compensation for Poor Service Delivery

0 226

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has introduced a compensation scheme for electricity consumers who receive poor service from their distribution companies (DisCos).

According to a document signed by NERC’s Chairman and Commissioner for Legal Licensing & Compliance, consumers can claim compensation if their DisCo fails to provide 90% of the electricity hours due to them in a month.

NERC will evaluate the average availability of 11kV and 33kV feeders on a monthly basis to determine if the committed service levels are met.

Prepaid customers will receive a token in kilowatt per hour (kWh) to account for the difference between the vented tariff and the actual service experienced in the month.

For postpaid customers, the resulting bill will be adjusted based on the actual service experienced during the period. DisCos must file monthly reports of customers’ compensation for service failure with the commission.
