Communications and Digital Economy Minister Isa Pantami has urged telecom companies and other sector stakeholders to ignore any attempts to impose a 5% excise tax on telecom services.

According to the minister, the sector has been exempted from excise tax with the approval of President Muhammad Buhari (retd) announced on March 21, 2023. He reiterated that this takes precedence over any other statement on the matter.

The minister said after a report that showed the federal government would go ahead with the introduction of a 5% excise duty on mobile phones, landlines and internet services, despite announcing his previous exemptions.

“Pantami continues to oppose his proposed 5% excise duty on telecommunications services,” the statement said.
