The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has reiterated September 12, 2026 as the deadline for individuals, businesses and other occupants encroaching on high-voltage transmission line Right-of-Way (RoW) corridors across Ghana to vacate the areas. The warning comes as the company intensifies efforts to protect critical power infrastructure and prevent activities that could put lives and electricity supply at risk.
GRIDCo said that once the deadline expires, it will work with relevant statutory institutions to enforce the law and remove unauthorised structures and activities from the affected transmission corridors. The company’s latest warning follows the completion of emergency works to replace a damaged tower along the 161kV Tema-Achimota transmission line in the Ashaiman area.
The damaged tower was brought down after a tanker crashed into it, forcing GRIDCo to undertake replacement works that resulted in a 15-hour power outage on two consecutive weekends in parts of the Greater Accra Region. GRIDCo has since confirmed that power supply to all areas affected by the maintenance exercise has been restored, while thanking residents and other members of the public for their patience and cooperation during the disruption.
The company stressed that encroachment on transmission line corridors remains a serious public safety concern and can also threaten the reliability of Ghana’s national power transmission system. Under the Transmission Line Protection Regulations, 1967 (L.I. 542), as amended by L.I. 1737 of 2004, activities such as unauthorised construction, excavation, drilling, commercial operations, lorry parks, shops and garages are prohibited within designated transmission corridors where they could interfere with the safe operation and maintenance of power infrastructure.
GRIDCo’s September 12 deadline follows a directive from the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, ordering persons, businesses, land users and other entities occupying transmission line Rights-of-Way to stop unauthorised activities and leave the affected areas within one month. With the deadline approaching, GRIDCo is urging affected occupants to comply, warning that enforcement and the removal of illegal structures will follow if the affected corridors are not cleared.
