China Chengxin International Credit Rating Co. Ltd. (CCXI) has reaffirmed the African Export-Import Bank’s (Afreximbank) AAA issuer credit rating, keeping a stable outlook for the second consecutive year. The latest assessment strengthens the bank’s position among highly rated financial institutions and reflects continued confidence in its ability to manage risks and meet its financial obligations.

In its 2026 Credit Rating Report released in Beijing on July 30, CCXI said Afreximbank’s credit rating is expected to remain stable over the next 12 to 18 months. The rating agency pointed to the bank’s strong strategic position, sound risk management, flexible business operations, profitability and prudent liquidity management as key factors supporting its overall credit strength.

Afreximbank’s latest AAA affirmation comes alongside ratings from several other major agencies. Earlier this year, S&P Global Ratings assigned the bank a BBB+ long-term issuer credit rating and an A-2 short-term rating, both with a stable outlook. The bank also maintains investment-grade ratings from GCR, Japan Credit Rating Agency and Moody’s, rated A, A- and Baa2 respectively.

Chandi Mwenebungu, Afreximbank’s Managing Director for Treasury and Markets and Treasurer, said the continued AAA rating was a strong endorsement of the institution’s financial strength and disciplined approach to risk management. He added that the recognition also highlights the bank’s growing importance to Africa and the wider Global African community.

The bank has also been expanding its presence in international financial markets. In 2025, Afreximbank issued a RMB2.2 billion Panda bond, becoming the first African multilateral development institution to access China’s Panda bond market. It later became a direct participant in China’s Cross-border Interbank Payment System (CIPS), deepening its financial links with the Chinese market. With CCXI maintaining its AAA rating and stable outlook, Afreximbank enters the coming period with continued support for its financial credibility and international funding strategy.
