Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has taken a major step toward modernising the country’s capital market with the rollout of a fully electronic registration platform for Capital Market Operators (CMOs). The new digital system, introduced through the Commission’s ePortal, is designed to eliminate manual registration processes, improve efficiency, and make regulatory services faster and more transparent for stakeholders across the financial sector.
According to a statement issued by the SEC on Wednesday, the e-registration platform enables designated regulatory services to be completed entirely online. From application submission and regulatory review to approvals and official communication, the platform streamlines the entire process into a seamless digital experience. The initiative is part of the Commission’s broader digital transformation strategy aimed at creating a technology-driven regulatory environment that supports innovation and strengthens market operations.
The Commission explained that the new platform will significantly reduce administrative bottlenecks that have traditionally slowed regulatory processes. Applicants will now enjoy faster processing times, improved visibility into the status of their applications, and more efficient communication with the regulator. In addition, the electronic system introduces secure digital record management, standardised workflows, and stronger audit trails, improving both operational efficiency and regulatory oversight.
While celebrating the launch, the SEC clarified that the implementation will be introduced in phases to ensure a smooth transition for market participants. For now, the electronic registration process is available only for post-registration services involving existing Capital Market Operators. Applications from new entrants seeking registration in Nigeria’s capital market will remain outside the current rollout, with the Commission promising to announce the commencement of digital processing for new registrations at a later date.
The SEC has encouraged all market operators to familiarise themselves with the new platform and comply with the implementation schedule to ensure a seamless migration to the digital system. The Commission believes the initiative will strengthen transparency, improve the ease of doing business, enhance investor confidence, and position Nigeria’s capital market for sustainable growth and greater global competitiveness. As the country continues embracing digital innovation, the new e-registration platform represents another significant milestone in building a more resilient and efficient financial ecosystem.
