Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has urged telecommunications operators across the country to urgently improve service quality, warning that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will take regulatory action against companies that fail to meet required standards.
Speaking in a statement on Sunday, Tijani said the telecom sector has now stabilised following recent federal government reforms, adding that operators are currently profitable and have the financial capacity to address long-standing network challenges affecting users nationwide.
He stressed that companies such as MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, and T2 must take full responsibility for improving call quality, data performance, and network coverage, noting that Nigerians deserve better value for the services they pay for.
According to him, the NCC has been fully empowered to monitor operators, enforce compliance, and ensure service standards are met, with periodic reports and user feedback to be used in assessing performance. He added that while operators that meet expectations will be recognised, those that fail will face appropriate sanctions.
Tijani also revealed that the government is addressing structural challenges in the telecom sector through major infrastructure investments, including World Bank-backed Project BRIDGE for nationwide fibre deployment, new tower rollouts, and expanded satellite connectivity aimed at improving digital access over the next two to five years.
