Google has expanded its artificial intelligence capabilities in Nigeria, enabling users to generate images directly through Google Search and Google Lens. The new feature allows people to create high-quality visuals simply by describing what they want to see, marking a significant step in Google AI image creation in Nigeria.
The tool is powered by Google’s latest image model, Google Nano Banana 2, which is designed to produce detailed and context-aware visuals within seconds. Available via the Google App and mobile browsers, the system aims to make professional-grade image creation accessible to a broader audience, from students to entrepreneurs and digital artists.
According to the company, the rollout aligns with its goal of democratising advanced AI tools. Communications & PR Manager, West Africa at Google, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, said Nigerians are globally recognised for their creativity, and the technology offers a new channel for expression. He noted that a small business owner in Yaba could visualise a new storefront concept instantly, while a storyteller could design a consistent comic character set in Lagos, all from a smartphone.
Google explained that this is the first AI image generation tool integrated directly with Search to improve real-world accuracy. By drawing on Search data, the system can generate more realistic depictions of known landmarks, brands and objects, reducing the inconsistencies often seen in AI-generated visuals. The feature also allows users to maintain consistent character appearances across multiple images—an advantage for illustrators, animators and brand creators.
To ensure responsible use, Google confirmed that every AI-generated image will carry an invisible digital watermark called SynthID, alongside embedded metadata under the C2PA standard. This digital fingerprint identifies the image as AI-generated, reinforcing transparency while opening new creative possibilities for Nigerians exploring the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
