Nigeria’s crude oil and condensate production totaled 554.4 million barrels in 2025, according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). This represents a slight decline of 2% compared with 566.8 million barrels in 2024, but daily average output increased by 5% to 1.63 million barrels per day (mb/d) from 1.55 mb/d the previous year.

The higher daily output reflects operational resilience in the country’s oil sector, as reopened shut-in wells and a relatively stable Niger Delta helped offset challenges such as routine maintenance shutdowns and the Escravos-Lagos Pipeline explosion. Analysts noted that monthly averages remained robust, with January and February peaking at 1.73 mb/d before gradually tapering to 1.54 mb/d in December.

Crude oil production alone, excluding condensate, averaged 1.42 mb/d, fulfilling 95% of Nigeria’s OPEC quota of 1.5 mb/d. This is a notable improvement from 2024, when output was hampered by sabotage and oil theft. December’s output of 1.54 mb/d, though lower than 2024’s 1.66 mb/d, underscored consistent gains from mid-decade security improvements across key production regions.

The year’s performance also benefited from government initiatives such as Operation Delta Safe, which targeted illegal bunkering and boosted the reactivation of dormant wells. Despite ageing infrastructure and delayed investments, Nigeria’s oil sector maintained stability, supporting projections of over N50 trillion in revenue, even amid falling global Brent crude prices that started the year at $79/b and closed at $63/b.

Industry experts suggest that, if security conditions remain stable and no major geopolitical disruptions occur, Nigeria could see 2026 daily output rise to 1.7 mb/d, surpassing current OPEC targets. The combination of improved security, operational efficiency, and strategic government intervention positions the country as a resilient oil producer in the region.
