TikTok announced plans to implement “Content Credentials,” a technology developed by Adobe, to label images and videos created by artificial intelligence (AI) on its platform.
This move aims to increase transparency and help users distinguish AI-generated content from human-generated content.
Content Credentials, a digital watermark indicating how images were created and edited, has already been adopted by companies like OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT. The initiative comes amidst concerns that AI-generated content could be used for misinformation, particularly in the lead-up to U.S. elections.
Several tech giants, including YouTube and Meta Platforms (owner of Instagram and Facebook), have also committed to using Content Credentials. For the system to be effective, both the AI tool maker and the platform must agree to use the industry standard.
TikTok, with 170 million users in the United States, is facing regulatory challenges, including a law requiring its owner, ByteDance, to divest TikTok or face a ban. TikTok has contested this law, citing First Amendment rights.
