Cashew farmers in Nigeria anticipate a slight decrease in output for the 2024 season due to the severe harmattan season experienced in key growing areas. The harsh harmattan conditions have adversely affected cashew trees during critical stages of production, causing flowers to wither during the reproductive phase.
Tola Faseru, president of the African Cashew Alliance (ACA), highlighted the challenges posed by the harsh harmattan, which includes excessive heat hindering proper flower budding and fruit production in major growing regions. Efforts are underway to address these challenges and enhance local cashew production.
Farmers are being encouraged to switch to high-yield varieties, and both federal and state governments are facilitating the availability of large suitable areas for cashew cultivation.
