In a diplomatic move, Japan welcomed Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal in Tokyo on Monday to discuss Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts amidst the ongoing conflict.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida affirmed Japan’s unwavering support for Ukraine, announcing the initiation of a new bilateral tax treaty and the commencement of negotiations for an investment treaty during the talks.
Prime Minister Shmyhal, expressing gratitude through a translator, highlighted the meeting as a milestone in Japan-Ukraine relations, emphasizing the enduring appreciation of Ukrainians for Japan’s support. Shmyhal expressed hopes for increased investment from major carmakers like Toyota (7203.T), advocating for the establishment of production facilities in Ukraine to foster economic growth and stability.
The meeting also witnessed the signing of agreements between around 50 Japanese companies and Ukrainian counterparts across various sectors, including agriculture, energy, and infrastructure, although the total value of these deals remains undisclosed.
Kishida and Shmyhal expressed the importance of international support for Ukraine, particularly in preparation for the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Germany scheduled for June, as outlined in a joint communique issued post the meeting.
