Nigeria, the largest economy in Africa, has been attempting to capture the gas emitted from its oil fields for export. In an effort to cut carbon emissions, the chief executive of Nigeria’s petroleum regulator announced in a statement that 139 companies have been shortlisted for the program’s next phase of commercializing gas flaring.

The commercialization of gas burned from Nigeria’s oil fields is planned, according to the country’s state minister for petroleum resources, and it will help reduce 15 million tonnes of carbon emissions from the atmosphere.

Out of the 300 companies that applied, 139 were shortlisted, according to Gbenga Komolafe, chief executive of the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission. These companies will move on to the program’s next phase.
