India Bridge Collapse, Death Toll Rises to 134; Police Hold Nine.

The India bridge, which connects the Darbargadh Palace historic hotel with the town, is 1. 25 meters (4.1 feet) wide and spans 233 meters (255 yards). It was constructed in 1877 during India’s British colonial era.

Police detained nine people as part of a criminal investigation into one of the deadliest tragedies to hit the country in the preceding 10 years; raising the total number of fatalities from an Indian suspension bridge collapse to 134, including numerous children.

Police in the western state of Gujarat, where the incident took place, informed Reuters that they had detained nine persons after filing a criminal complaint against those in charge of the bridge’s reconstruction, upkeep, and administration.

A local politician from the Bharatiya Janata accused Oreva of selling tickets with no constraints; and claimed that overpopulation was to blame for the collapse of the bridge.

The former chief minister of Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sent his sympathies to the families of the victims.
