OpenAI has established a new independent advisory group focused on mathematics and artificial intelligence, as the company faces growing attention over the ability of its AI models to tackle complex mathematical problems. The group, announced Monday and hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in Princeton, New Jersey, is designed to strengthen communication between OpenAI and the wider mathematical community.

The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence will give mathematicians a greater voice in how OpenAI approaches and presents its mathematics research. The company said the group will act as a bridge between the mathematical community and the public, particularly as AI systems become increasingly involved in solving difficult mathematical problems.

The announcement follows OpenAI’s recent publication of a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem, one of the major unsolved problems in mathematics. OpenAI also said the same internal AI model has resolved more than 100 other open problems spanning multiple areas of mathematics. The claims, however, have attracted scrutiny from prominent mathematicians, with 25 Fields Medal winners recently signing an open letter warning about the pressure AI companies may be placing on mathematical research.

The new advisory group is expected to assess the significance of mathematical results and help coordinate their public release. Its members will not be paid and will retain the ability to offer unsolicited advice and publicly express their views. However, the group will not have authority over the pace or direction of OpenAI’s internal mathematical research, meaning final decisions will remain with the company.

The Institute for Advanced Study also stressed that its involvement does not give it decision-making authority over AI companies. Nine prominent mathematicians have been named as the group’s initial members, including IAS mathematician Camillo De Lellis, who was the only member to also sign the recent Fields Medalists’ open letter. The development highlights the growing intersection between AI and advanced mathematics, while also raising broader questions about how the mathematical community should evaluate and respond to AI-generated breakthroughs.
