IHS Nigeria has renewed its commitment to building a more sustainable, resilient and inclusive telecommunications and technology sector, as industry stakeholders push for stronger sustainability standards across Nigeria’s digital infrastructure. The company made the commitment at a stakeholder breakfast session organized by the Telecommunications and Technology Sustainability Working Group (TTSWG) in Abuja.

The September 17 engagement, held at the Abuja Continental Hotel, brought together regulators, technology companies, academics, development organizations, startups and other industry stakeholders to examine key sustainability priorities. Discussions focused on the TTSWG’s 2025–2030 strategy and proposed sustainability metrics for Nigeria’s telecommunications industry, which are expected to guide further engagement with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Representing IHS Nigeria, Director of Sustainability Titilope Oguntuga said collaboration among industry players, regulators and other stakeholders would be critical to strengthening Nigeria’s digital infrastructure. She noted that the TTSWG provides a platform for policy dialogue, research, capacity building and partnerships, while stressing that technology and innovation can play a major role in tackling challenges facing the sector.

The proposed sustainability framework, presented by TTSWG Board Member Dr. Chris Uwaje, seeks to introduce measurable indicators covering areas such as renewable energy and decarbonization, digital inclusion and affordability, consumer trust, infrastructure resilience, governance and waste reduction. NCC representative Helen Obi, Director of the Commission’s Digital Economy Department, also identified areas of alignment with the regulator’s priorities, including broadband expansion, resilient connectivity, digital skills, local device manufacturing and assistive technologies for people with disabilities. The NCC encouraged TTSWG to formally submit the framework for further review and feedback.

Stakeholders at the meeting also called for improved access to financing for technology innovation, stronger alignment with international standards and greater attention to accessibility and the practical implementation of research outcomes. TTSWG Chairman Engr. Abdu-Waya Mohammed said the strategy remains a draft and would benefit from further industry input, while Vice Chairperson Dr. Wunmi Hassan urged stakeholders to remain engaged as efforts continue to build a coordinated and sustainable telecommunications and technology ecosystem in Nigeria.
