The Federal Government is set to deploy more than 300 containers of critical power equipment to strengthen Nigeria’s transmission network and improve electricity supply across the country. Minister of Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, disclosed this during a media briefing in Abuja, saying the equipment had been released from the ports for inspection, deployment and installation.

According to the Minister, the equipment had remained stranded at the ports even as several power projects were awaiting completion. He said the release would help accelerate ongoing Nigeria transmission network upgrades, particularly across key electricity corridors including Lagos, Enugu-Port Harcourt and Abuja-Kaduna-Kano.

Tegbe also disclosed that the government had commissioned new transformers in Apapa, Ijora, Alausa and Lekki, unlocking 672 megawatts (MW) of capacity, while a 300MVA transformer at Katampe added another 240MW. He said generation and transmission levels had exceeded 5,000MW in recent weeks, compared with between 3,700MW and 4,700MW before June, while generation reached a peak of 5,330MW during August and September.

Beyond transmission infrastructure, the Minister said the government had raised N1.23 trillion towards settling a N3.3 trillion backlog of power-sector debt. He added that the resolution of some litigation had cleared the way for the procurement of about 1.4 million smart meters, while military formations had recorded 90,000 installations. The government is also working towards a Transmission Super Grid aimed at improving the use of existing generation and distribution assets.

The latest intervention comes as the Federal Government continues efforts to address persistent weaknesses in Nigeria’s electricity network. In March 2026, President Bola Tinubu proposed the establishment of a Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO) to tackle challenges within the transmission network. With the newly released equipment now expected to move from storage into active projects, attention will turn to how quickly the upgrades can be completed and whether they can translate into a more stable electricity supply for households and businesses.
