ChatGPT Dominates AI Chatbot Market With 79.4% Global Share, Gemini Gains Ground

0 71

ChatGPT continues to dominate the global artificial intelligence chatbot market, accounting for 79.4 per cent of global AI chatbot market share in August 2026, according to StatCounter data. Google’s Gemini followed with 10.9 per cent, while Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Anthropic’s Claude recorded 4.31 per cent, 2.79 per cent and 2.57 per cent respectively. The figures, however, measure web usage and do not capture the entire large language model (LLM) market, particularly enterprise and developer API activity.

Nigeria is also following the global trend, with ChatGPT accounting for 75.72 per cent of measured AI chatbot market share in August. Gemini recorded 13.35 per cent, followed by Microsoft Copilot at 4.48 per cent, Claude at 3.73 per cent and Perplexity at 2.73 per cent. Across Africa, ChatGPT held 72.75 per cent of the market, compared with Gemini’s 16.14 per cent. StatCounter data further showed ChatGPT leading in 192 of 198 countries, although its share declined in many markets as competing AI platforms expanded.

Beyond web traffic, growing user engagement shows just how quickly the AI industry is expanding. Sensor Tower projected that global time spent on generative-AI applications would more than double from 17.2 billion hours in the first half of 2025 to 36 billion hours in the first half of 2026. ChatGPT also reached one billion monthly active users in May 2026, while ChatGPT, DeepSeek and Gemini together accounted for nearly 90 per cent of time spent across AI-assistant applications during the first quarter of the year.

The broader AI economy, meanwhile, is becoming increasingly difficult to measure through chatbot rankings alone. Stanford University’s 2026 AI Index reported that generative AI reached 53 per cent adoption within three years, while 88 per cent of surveyed organisations had adopted AI and 70 per cent were using generative AI in at least one business function. On Vercel’s AI Gateway, DeepSeek led token volume at 62.9 per cent for the three months ending September 18, while Anthropic accounted for 42.6 per cent of spending, highlighting how rankings can change depending on whether usage, requests, tokens or spending is measured.

For Nigeria, the rapid expansion of AI presents opportunities across businesses, education, software development, media and public services, but also highlights the growing need for affordable computing, stronger broadband access, local-language AI and enterprise solutions. While ChatGPT currently commands the largest measured share of Nigeria’s AI chatbot market, the growing presence of Gemini, Claude, DeepSeek, Perplexity and Copilot suggests that competition is widening. The emerging AI race, therefore, is no longer simply about which chatbot has the most users, but about which platforms can capture different segments of the fast-growing global AI economy.
