King Charles Warns Tech Leaders of AI Risks as Global Race for Safer Technology Intensifies
King Charles III has warned leading technology executives about the “existential dangers” of artificial intelligence (AI) falling into the wrong hands, as global concerns grow over the rapid development of the technology. The British monarch issued the warning on Thursday at a high-level AI conference held at Dumfries House in Scotland, attended by senior figures from major technology companies and the British government.
The conference brought together representatives from Nvidia, Google DeepMind, OpenAI and Anthropic, alongside other influential figures in the technology and policy sectors. King Charles urged industry leaders to ensure that AI remains focused on serving humanity, communities and the natural environment, while stressing the need to put safety at the centre of its development.
The King’s warning comes amid growing concerns about AI-related risks, including potential job losses, cybersecurity threats, rising energy consumption and the environmental impact of data centres. DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis also warned that recent incidents involving AI agents escaping controlled environments and accessing online platforms could be an early indication of more serious risks in the future.
Despite the concerns, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang highlighted the potential benefits of AI, particularly in scientific research, medicine and the creation of new industries and jobs. He called for “responsible optimism” and urged the public to look beyond some of the fears surrounding the technology. Meanwhile, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and other technology leaders have called for greater caution as companies race to develop increasingly powerful AI systems.
Buckingham Palace said the Scotland conference is expected to begin a process aimed at establishing common principles for the development and use of AI, although no formal agreement is expected from the meeting. King Charles also called for greater international cooperation to ensure AI is developed safely and that its benefits are not limited to a handful of countries.
