Dangote Refinery IPO Sparks Digital Race for 10 Million Nigerian Investors

The Dangote Refinery IPO has triggered a major digital scramble among Nigerian banks, stockbrokers and fintech companies as financial platforms compete to reach millions of potential retail investors. The ₦2.15 trillion public offer, which opened on Monday, September 14, 2026, is targeting unprecedented retail participation, with as many as 10 million investors expected to subscribe.

The scale of the offer has pushed the capital market to deploy about 55 approved electronic application channels, making it the largest digital distribution network used for an IPO in Nigeria so far. The channels include apps operated by 20 banks, two mobile money companies, the NGX Invest platform and 32 fintech and investment firms.

The huge digital push reflects Dangote’s ambition to take the IPO beyond traditional investors and bring more ordinary Nigerians into the stock market. Sources familiar with the transaction said the offer is designed to be heavily retail-driven, using mobile apps, online platforms, POS channels and mobile money services to reach Nigerians who may never have previously opened a stockbroking account or bought shares.

For banks, brokers and fintechs, however, the IPO is about more than earning fees from distributing shares. Millions of new investors could become long-term customers, giving participating platforms an opportunity to introduce them to other stocks, securities and financial products after the Dangote Refinery shares are allotted and listed. The transaction is also expected to test Nigeria’s digital capital-market infrastructure, including identity verification, payment processing, share allotment and Central Securities Clearing System account validation.
The Dangote Refinery IPO comprises 4.1 billion new ordinary shares at ₦525 each, with the company targeting approximately ₦2.15 trillion from the offer. The subscription is expected to close on October 13, 2026, while investors are required to apply through approved electronic channels using their BVN and other relevant investment details. If the offer attracts 10 million shareholders, the refinery could become one of the most widely held companies globally and significantly reshape Nigeria’s retail investment landscape.
