OpenAI is deepening its partnership with Samsung Electronics through joint production and research into next-generation chips, as the ChatGPT maker expands its artificial intelligence and semiconductor operations.
Harrison Kim, general manager of OpenAI Korea, disclosed that Samsung Electronics is one of the areas where the company has made significant progress in its chip development efforts. Speaking at a press conference in Seoul, Kim said the two companies were working together on the production and research of next-generation chips, although he did not reveal specific details about the technology or production plans.
The partnership goes beyond semiconductors, with OpenAI describing Samsung Electronics as one of the largest-scale users of ChatGPT globally. According to Kim, Samsung employees are using the AI technology across areas including research and development, marketing and sales. Samsung, however, said it could not confirm information concerning individual customers.
OpenAI unveiled its first custom AI chip, Jalapeno, in June, saying it was designed with Broadcom for AI inference workloads and would be manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix signed letters of intent last year to supply memory chips for OpenAI’s Stargate data centre project, highlighting South Korea’s growing importance to OpenAI’s expanding AI infrastructure.
The growing collaboration comes as businesses accelerate their adoption of artificial intelligence. OpenAI said the number of enterprise users of ChatGPT at South Korean companies and institutions had risen about 28-fold by the end of August compared with a year earlier, with businesses using AI for legal, sales, finance, marketing and operational tasks. The company also said South Korea had the largest number of paying ChatGPT subscribers outside the United States as of late last year, with adoption expected to increase following the launch of its latest GPT-6 Astra model.
