Tinubu: Nigeria’s GDP Growth Signals Economic Reforms Are Paying Off

President Bola Tinubu has said Nigeria’s latest GDP growth figures show that his administration’s economic reforms are beginning to deliver results, describing the country’s economy as being on an “irreversible path” towards stronger growth. His comments followed the latest figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which showed that Nigeria’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 4.43 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, up from 4.23 percent recorded in the same period of 2025.

According to Tinubu, the figures are evidence that the difficult economic decisions taken by his administration over the past three years are gradually stabilising the economy. In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president said the government had focused on implementing what he described as necessary reforms to lay the foundation for long-term economic prosperity. He added that the results of those measures were becoming increasingly visible, saying the Renewed Hope Agenda was working.

The president also pointed to stronger foreign reserves, improved credit ratings, increased oil production and renewed investor interest as other signs of progress. Tinubu said Nigeria now has trade surpluses and that the country’s foreign reserves are at their highest level in 17 years. He also highlighted ongoing investments in roads, railways and other infrastructure, alongside developments in the education sector, including expanded access to student loans through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

However, the president acknowledged that stronger economic figures must eventually translate into better living conditions for ordinary Nigerians. He said his administration would introduce measures in the coming weeks aimed at reducing the pressure on vulnerable citizens. The planned interventions include cheaper transportation, increased food production and other relief programmes designed to ease the impact of rising living costs.

Tinubu said the government remained committed to ensuring that Nigeria’s improving economic performance is felt beyond official statistics and becomes meaningful in the daily lives of citizens. With GDP growth now picking up, the next challenge will be sustaining the momentum while turning broader economic gains into improved household welfare, more opportunities and a better standard of living for Nigerians.
