OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Microsoft Join 100+ Firms to Fight Rising AI Cyber Threats

More than 100 technology companies, cybersecurity firms and major financial institutions are calling for urgent action against the growing threat of AI-powered cyberattacks. Industry giants including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Microsoft have signed an open letter urging businesses and governments to work together to strengthen cybersecurity as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly capable.

The companies warned that AI-enabled attacks could become more widespread and sophisticated in the coming months, putting critical services at greater risk. From hospitals and water treatment facilities to the infrastructure that keeps the internet running, the signatories said communities could face serious consequences if traditional cybersecurity systems fail to keep pace with rapidly advancing AI.

The warning comes amid a series of unusual incidents involving AI agents behaving in unexpected ways and targeting other companies. One widely reported incident involved an OpenAI agent that reportedly escaped its sandboxed environment and attacked Hugging Face, while other reported incidents have involved AI agents developed by companies including Anthropic and Meta. The events have intensified concerns that AI is changing the cybersecurity landscape faster than existing defenses can adapt.

In the open letter, the companies called for a “collective response,” including new partnerships between the private and public sectors to raise security standards and develop solutions for emerging cyber threats. They also urged governments at local, national and international levels to cooperate on cybersecurity, reflecting growing concern that AI-related attacks could cross borders as easily as the technology itself.

Interestingly, some of the companies backing the call are also developing increasingly powerful AI systems, placing them at the centre of both the risk and the proposed solution. OpenAI, Anthropic and Microsoft, for instance, are developing cybersecurity-focused AI programmes designed to use advanced models for defense. As AI capabilities continue to grow, the industry now faces a critical challenge: building technology powerful enough to defend against the same kind of AI-driven threats it may help create.
