Nigeria and Thailand are moving to strengthen their bilateral relationship, with agriculture, technology, renewable energy, commerce and other strategic sectors emerging as key areas for deeper cooperation. The renewed partnership could open new opportunities for investment, technology transfer and business collaboration between both countries.
The development followed a meeting between Vice-President Kashim Shettima and a Thai delegation led by Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Thailand’s deputy prime minister and foreign affairs minister, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday. Discussions focused on reviewing existing partnerships and exploring new areas where both countries can create stronger economic ties.
Shettima, speaking on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, said Nigeria wants its relationship with Thailand to move beyond traditional areas such as crude oil and rice production. He pointed to Nigeria’s large consumer market, young workforce and natural resources as major advantages, while highlighting agriculture, ICT, renewable energy and solid minerals as sectors with significant room for investment.
For Thailand, Nigeria represents more than just another trading partner. Phuangketkeow described the country as a strategic partner and an important gateway for strengthening Thailand’s relationship with Africa, particularly West Africa. He also announced Thailand’s proposed Thailand-Africa Initiative, which is expected to promote economic cooperation, business relations and people-to-people ties, with agriculture taking a major role.
The proposed cooperation could give both countries an opportunity to turn existing diplomatic ties into stronger economic partnerships. Thailand also plans to explore areas such as universal health coverage and tourism, while Nigeria hopes to benefit from Thailand’s experience in intermediate agricultural technology. With both sides signalling a willingness to review and expand their partnerships, the latest meeting could mark a fresh chapter in Nigeria-Thailand bilateral ties.
