China has pledged more than N40 billion (RMB 200 million) in grant assistance to Nigeria, in a move expected to strengthen bilateral relations and support developmental projects in the country.
The commitment was disclosed on Thursday during a meeting between the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, and the Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr Ahmed Dunoma, in Abuja. According to a statement from the Chinese Embassy, the grant is part of China’s continued support for Nigeria’s national development and economic growth.
Speaking during the meeting, Ambassador Yu noted that China and Nigeria have maintained strong relations since establishing diplomatic ties 55 years ago. He said the relationship has continued to grow, particularly under the leadership of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with both countries working to deepen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Yu explained that the RMB 200 million grant would be used to implement development projects agreed upon by the two governments. He added that China and Nigeria would continue working together to turn agreements between their leaders into practical projects capable of delivering benefits to citizens in both countries.
Responding, Dr Dunoma expressed Nigeria’s appreciation for China’s support, describing the grant as a reflection of the strong friendship between both nations. He assured that Nigeria would make effective use of the assistance and continue working with China to strengthen bilateral cooperation, with the ultimate goal of creating greater economic and social benefits for Nigerians.
