Bank of America is strengthening its commitment to Africa with a major leadership reshuffle aimed at expanding its corporate and investment banking footprint across the continent. The global financial giant has appointed seasoned dealmaker Simbah Mutasa to head its Africa franchise, a move that signals growing confidence in the region’s investment potential after the bank played a significant role in Dangote Fertilizer’s $750 million private placement.

Mutasa, who previously led the bank’s investment banking operations in South Africa, will now oversee deal-making activities across Africa. According to an internal memo reviewed by Bloomberg, the appointment reflects Bank of America’s strategy to deepen its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing investment destinations. Matt Cannon, the bank’s Head of EMEA Investment Banking, said Mutasa’s expanded role will help drive the continued growth of the lender’s investment banking franchise across the African region.

The leadership changes extend beyond Africa. Bank of America also promoted Van Hooijdonk to oversee investment banking across the Benelux region while retaining his leadership role in the Netherlands. Although the bank declined to officially comment on the appointments, the promotions highlight its broader ambition to accelerate international growth and strengthen relationships with corporate clients in key global markets.

Africa continues to attract increasing attention from global financial institutions as demand for infrastructure financing, capital market transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and cross-border advisory services gathers momentum. Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions in parts of the world, investors remain optimistic about Africa’s long-term prospects, driven by its rapidly growing population, expanding consumer markets, renewable energy opportunities, critical mineral resources, and thriving digital and fintech sectors.

Bank of America’s recent involvement as joint placement agent for Dangote Fertilizer’s $750 million private placement underscores its growing influence in Africa’s high-profile transactions. As multinational lenders compete for a larger share of the continent’s investment banking business, the bank’s latest leadership appointments position it to capitalize on rising deal activity and reinforce its role as a trusted financial partner for businesses looking to unlock opportunities across Africa.
