The World Bank has officially opened applications for the 2027 Africa Fellowship Programme, creating a valuable opportunity for eligible Nigerian PhD candidates and recent doctoral graduates to gain international experience in development research and policymaking. The fellowship, which began accepting applications on July 15, will remain open until August 25, 2026, giving aspiring researchers a chance to join one of the world’s leading development institutions.
Designed to strengthen Africa’s next generation of development professionals, the fellowship provides participants with practical exposure to economic policy, research, technical assistance, and lending operations. Successful applicants will spend six months working either at the World Bank Group headquarters in Washington, D.C., or at one of its country offices, where they will contribute to projects focused on reducing poverty and promoting shared prosperity across developing nations.
To qualify, applicants must be citizens of a Sub-Saharan African country, including Nigeria, and either be in the final year of a PhD programme or have completed their doctorate within the last three years. Candidates must also be 32 years old or younger as of January 1, 2027, demonstrate excellent written and spoken English, and possess strong analytical and quantitative skills. These requirements are aimed at selecting highly motivated scholars with the potential to shape Africa’s development landscape.
The recruitment process will be conducted in two stages. Applicants will first be shortlisted based on their academic qualifications and areas of expertise before being reviewed by various World Bank departments, which will make the final selection. Successful candidates will be engaged as World Bank consultants from January 2027, contributing to research, policy development, institutional strengthening, and operational projects across sectors that support Africa’s long-term growth.
