Apple’s best-selling MacBook Air is now feeling the impact of the global memory chip shortage, creating longer wait times for customers and raising concerns about product availability. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the ongoing shortage—driven largely by the soaring demand for memory chips from artificial intelligence companies—is beginning to affect Apple’s most popular laptop, signaling that the supply crunch is becoming more widespread.
The shortage had previously been limited to Apple’s less mainstream desktop computers, including the Mac mini and Mac Studio. However, retailers are now reporting tighter supplies of the MacBook Air than ever before, with inventory becoming increasingly difficult to replenish. The growing demand for advanced memory components has put significant pressure on manufacturers, leaving major tech companies competing for limited supplies.
Customers ordering a MacBook Air directly from Apple’s online store are already experiencing noticeable delays. Depending on the model and configuration selected, delivery estimates have slipped into the second half of August, while some versions are not expected to ship until September. These extended wait times reflect the ongoing strain on Apple’s supply chain as it works to meet global demand.
To ease the situation, Apple is reportedly exploring several strategies. Gurman says the company is increasing prices in certain areas and expanding its supplier network by sourcing memory chips from Chinese manufacturers. Apple has also postponed its annual back-to-school promotion, which traditionally begins in June, suggesting the company is carefully managing its available inventory during the shortage.
The company’s marketing strategy has also shifted in response to the supply constraints. Rather than heavily promoting the MacBook Air, Apple is placing greater emphasis on the entry-level MacBook Pro in its latest campaign. Marketing materials now include a clear disclaimer stating that the “MacBook Air is subject to availability,” highlighting the extent of the supply issues. As AI-driven demand for memory chips continues to grow, consumers may face longer waits and tighter inventories for some of Apple’s most sought-after products in the months ahead.
