The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as it continues implementing key economic reforms aimed at stabilising Nigeria’s economy, strengthening public finances, and creating a solid foundation for long-term growth. The renewed pledge was made during a farewell dinner in Abuja held in honour of the outgoing IMF Resident Representative in Nigeria, Dr. Christian Ebeke, whose three-year tenure coincided with one of the country’s most significant periods of economic reform.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, praised Ebeke for his professionalism, technical expertise, and unwavering support throughout Nigeria’s economic transition. He noted that the collaboration between the Federal Government and the IMF played an important role in advancing reforms focused on fiscal discipline, domestic revenue mobilisation, public debt management, foreign exchange policy, and restoring investor confidence. According to Oyedele, Ebeke’s approach was defined by collaboration and respect, as he consistently worked alongside Nigerian authorities rather than imposing external solutions.

The event also highlighted the growing partnership between Nigeria and the IMF. The Director of the International Economic Relations Department at the Ministry of Finance, Stanley George, described Ebeke’s tenure as one marked by constructive engagement and meaningful contributions to Nigeria’s reform agenda. Similarly, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, said the outgoing IMF representative served during a defining period when the government introduced bold policy measures to improve macroeconomic stability, strengthen policy credibility, and build confidence in the nation’s financial markets.

Responding to the tributes, Ebeke described his assignment in Nigeria as both professionally rewarding and personally enriching. He commended the resilience, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit of Nigerians, expressing optimism that continued reforms, sound economic policies, and strong collaboration among government institutions, development partners, and the private sector would position the country for inclusive and sustainable economic growth. He also thanked government officials, the media, development partners, and IMF colleagues for their support throughout his stay.

The farewell ceremony concluded with a renewed commitment from both Nigeria and the IMF to deepen their longstanding partnership as the country pursues its fiscal and macroeconomic reform agenda. With ongoing efforts to improve government finances, attract investment, and strengthen economic resilience, the Federal Government signalled that its collaboration with the IMF remains a key pillar in its strategy to achieve sustainable development and long-term prosperity for Nigerians.
