The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has intensified efforts to strengthen the security of the nation’s oil and gas infrastructure by advocating the deployment of drone surveillance technology across key operational areas. The move forms part of a broader collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Defence aimed at tackling persistent security threats, reducing crude oil theft, and safeguarding critical energy assets that are vital to Nigeria’s economy.
The commitment emerged during a strategic meeting between officials of the Ministry of Defence and the NUPRC in Abuja, where both institutions agreed to deepen cooperation through a mix of advanced technology and community-focused interventions. The partnership is expected to enhance surveillance capabilities while addressing some of the underlying causes of insecurity in oil-producing regions.
Speaking during the engagement, NUPRC Commission Chief Executive, Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, highlighted the positive impact of ongoing collaborations with security agencies, noting that Nigeria recently recorded oil production of nearly 1.8 million barrels per day. She attributed the achievement to sustained investments in security infrastructure, technology deployment, and personnel development, but stressed that more work remains to be done as the country seeks to increase production and attract fresh investments into the sector.
Eyesan emphasized that drone surveillance technology will play a critical role in monitoring the vast network of oil and gas facilities across Nigeria, enabling faster detection of security breaches and improving response times. She added that the commission plans to work closely with industry operators to develop a new security framework that will provide long-term governance structures and strengthen stakeholder participation in protecting national energy assets.
On its part, the Ministry of Defence is championing a non-kinetic security strategy focused on promoting peace and stability in host communities. Representing the Defence Minister, Maj. Gen. Arikpo Ekubi explained that the initiative will engage young people through sports and other empowerment programmes, including activities for persons with disabilities. The approach aligns with the Petroleum Industry Act’s host community development provisions and is expected to improve community relations, reduce tensions, and create a safer environment for investors as Nigeria continues its drive to boost oil production and curb crude theft.
