Google has officially announced what may be the biggest transformation in its history: a complete overhaul of Google Search powered by artificial intelligence. Revealed at Google I/O, the company says the traditional “ten blue links” format is being replaced with a more intelligent, interactive search experience designed to understand users’ intent rather than just match keywords.
Instead of showing a simple list of websites, the new Google Search will now deliver AI-driven responses, conversational results, and even interactive experiences. Users will be able to ask follow-up questions directly inside search, while the redesigned search box will support longer, more natural queries without needing separate search modes.
One of the most significant changes is the introduction of AI “information agents.” These agents will work in the background to monitor topics on behalf of users—such as market trends or specific updates—and deliver summarized insights when changes occur. Google says this builds on earlier tools like Google Alerts, but with far more intelligence and automation.
Google is also introducing a new layer of personalization through “mini apps” that users can create directly inside Search using natural language. These custom tools could help users plan meals, track fitness goals, or analyze financial data, turning Search from an information tool into an action-based assistant powered by Gemini AI and Google DeepMind technology.
While Google says these updates will make search more powerful and efficient, the shift raises concerns for publishers who rely heavily on search traffic. With fewer traditional link clicks expected, the update could further reduce referral traffic to websites. The new AI-powered Search experience will begin rolling out this summer, with some features initially limited to premium users before expanding more widely.
