SpaceXAI Talent Exodus Deepens as Over 50 Engineers Quit After Musk Merger

Elon Musk’s newly formed AI powerhouse, SpaceXAI, is reportedly experiencing a significant wave of staff departures just months after its high-profile merger. According to The Information, more than 50 engineers and researchers have left the company since February, raising fresh concerns about stability inside one of Musk’s most ambitious tech ventures.

Among the exits are key figures working across critical areas such as coding systems, world models, and the development of Grok voice technology. The departures have reportedly weakened core technical teams, with SpaceXAI’s pre-training unit—responsible for building foundational AI models—now reduced to only a small group of remaining specialists.

Rival companies are quickly capitalizing on the uncertainty. Meta has reportedly hired at least 11 former SpaceXAI employees, while Mira Murati’s Thinking Machines Lab has attracted at least seven. The ongoing talent migration highlights growing competition in the AI sector, where experienced researchers are in extremely high demand.

Tensions inside the company appear to have played a role in the exits. Reports suggest that leadership changes following SpaceX’s acquisition of xAI and its rebranding into SpaceXAI earlier this month have unsettled staff. Some employees also reportedly criticized an intense work culture and aggressive deadlines set for AI model training, particularly around the development of Grok.

However, not all departures are seen as purely negative. Some employees may be leaving to capitalize on financial opportunities, as SpaceX continues to offer share buybacks and employees anticipate potential liquidity events tied to future IPO expectations. Despite this, concerns remain that sustained talent loss could impact the company’s ability to compete at the cutting edge of AI development.
