Google has unveiled a major transformation of its Android operating system, introducing a new wave of artificial intelligence-powered features designed to make smartphones smarter, more secure, and highly personalised. The announcement was made during “The Android Show: I/O Edition,” a prelude to the company’s annual Google I/O developer conference.

The tech giant revealed that Android is evolving beyond a traditional operating system into what it calls an “Intelligent System,” powered by Gemini AI. This upgrade is designed to work seamlessly across smartphones, tablets, laptops, and even vehicles, with the goal of proactively assisting users in daily digital tasks.

Among the most notable innovations is Gemini App Automation, a feature that allows users to complete complex, multi-step actions across different apps using simple voice commands. Google also introduced “Rambler,” an AI-powered typing assistant in Gboard that refines speech into polished messages while supporting multilingual communication.

The update also includes a Gemini-powered Chrome assistant that can summarise web pages and answer questions instantly, alongside “Nano Banana,” an AI tool that converts web content into visual infographics or edits images directly in the browser. Google further improved cross-platform connectivity with expanded Quick Share support for iPhone users and a new migration tool called “OSmosis,” which transfers data and settings from iOS to Android seamlessly.

Other highlights include stronger digital wellbeing and security tools such as “Pause Point,” which limits impulsive app usage, and enhanced biometric theft protection for Android 17 devices. The update also introduces AI-generated widgets, smarter autofill tools, and redesigned 3D emojis under “Noto 3D.” Google says the rollout will begin later in 2026, with more announcements expected at the upcoming Google I/O conference.
