Elon Musk’s SpaceX Plans $55bn Texas “Terafab” Chip Factory to Power AI and Space Tech

Elon Musk’s SpaceX is making a bold move into the semiconductor industry with plans to build a massive $55 billion chip manufacturing facility in Texas. The project, called “Terafab,” signals a major expansion of Musk’s tech empire beyond rockets and electric vehicles into advanced chip production for artificial intelligence, robotics, and space systems.

According to a public notice released on Wednesday, the proposed facility would be located in Grimes County, about 70 miles northwest of Houston. The initial investment is expected to stand at $55 billion, though future phases could push the total cost as high as $119 billion if fully developed.

The factory is expected to be jointly operated by SpaceX and Tesla, reflecting Musk’s strategy of integrating his companies’ technological needs. The goal is to reduce reliance on global chip suppliers by building in-house capacity to support the growing demand for high-performance computing power.

Although Musk has no formal background in semiconductor manufacturing, he has consistently warned that future technologies—especially artificial intelligence and space-based systems—will require far more computing power than current supply chains can handle. The Terafab project is designed to meet that projected demand, with ambitions to produce chips capable of supporting massive computing loads both on Earth and potentially in space.

Local officials in Texas are now reviewing the proposal, including potential tax incentives to attract the project. The Grimes County Commissioners Court is expected to deliberate on the matter on June 3. If approved, Terafab could become one of the largest semiconductor manufacturing investments in U.S. history, positioning Texas as a key hub in the global chip race.
